Common questions

Are these passwords safe to use?
Yes. They are created in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator (the same one used for encryption keys) and are never sent to our server or saved.
Password or passphrase?
Passwords are compact and great for password managers. Passphrases ("Ocean-Fever-Magic-Lunar42") are easier to remember and type — use one for things you type often, like your computer login or password manager.
How long should it be?
Aim for “Strong” or better: at least 16 random characters, or 5 or more words. Use a different password for every site and keep them in a password manager.
Where do the passphrase words come from?
A public list of 2,048 common, easy-to-spell English words (the BIP-39 list). Every word is picked at random, so a 5-word passphrase has about 2048⁵ possibilities.

How to use it

  1. Choose Password or Passphrase

Passwords are best in a password manager; passphrases are easier to type and remember.

  2. Adjust the options

Set the length or number of words and which characters to use. A new one is made on every change.

  3. Check the strength

Aim for “Strong” or “Very strong”. The estimate shows how long a fast attacker would need.

  4. Copy it

Press “Copy” and paste it where you need it. Press “New” for another.

  • Use a different password for every account and save them in a password manager.
  • Nothing you generate is sent or saved anywhere.
